What can you expect from us?

Before you start a course the college offers you:

  • A prompt response to your enquiries: we aim to send an acknowledgement to you within 3 working days.
  • Impartial advice and counselling about suitable courses, even if these are not offered at the college.
  • Information about the college’s approach to students with learning difficulties or disabilities. The college supports a wide range of students. A disability statement details the extra facilities available. This is updated each year. Copies are available on request from the college reception.
  • Detailed course information covering entry requirements, course content and structure, assessment methods, course costs, teaching and learning methods and possible progression routes from the course. The college does this by offering you a prospectus published at least 11 months prior to the academic year it refers to. Leaflets are also available for individual courses.
  • A range of general information leaflets giving advice on topics such as financial matters.
  • Information about the college, including past examination results and details of what past students did after completing their courses.
  • Tours of the college and its facilities are available during Open Days and Evenings and at other advertised times.
  • An Enrolment Centre where the public are welcome to make personal enquiries from 9.00 am to 7.30 p.m., Monday to Friday, and on Wednesday evenings during term time until 8.00 p.m.
  • An advice shop in Vicarage Fields Shopping Centre, in Barking, which is open for enquires from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm (closed Wednesday and Sunday)
  • Unbiased and impartial selection procedures and interviews for full-time courses.
  • A prompt response to your written application and an interview offer for full-time courses within 2 working weeks of receiving your application.
  • Notification of the result of your interview within one week, with guidance on appropriate alternative provision if you are not placed on the learning programme of your first choice.
  • Continuing advice. If the offer of a place is provisional on achieving examination results, we will offer further guidance if you do not achieve the results you need.
  • Accreditation of prior learning will be offered where it is acceptable to examining bodies and relevant to your particular circumstances.
  • A main enrolment period every September which includes the opportunity for course guidance. The enrolment process is monitored each year by the Quality Manager to ensure agreed levels of service are maintained.
  • When you have started a course, the college offers you:
  • An induction programme which introduces you to your course, including any relevant health and safety features, and a general introduction to the college.
  • An introduction to the Key Skills Centre and Learning Support Service. These free services can help you to gain your qualification.
  • The opportunity to join the Student Union.
  • An up-to-date course timetable. Any changes will be given to you as soon as is reasonably possible.
  • Written information about your course and a Student Handbook that contains general information about the college.
  • High quality teaching and learning opportunities appropriate to the course. This is subject to independent inspection by Ofsted
  • Accredited courses which fulfil the requirements of the relevant examining bodies; e.g. Edexcel, City & Guilds, RSA, etc.
  • The opportunity to transfer to other courses if this is appropriate.
  • Access to library, learning resource and IT facilities as well as guidance in their use.
  • Fair and impartial assessments.
  • Prompt, written feedback of internal assessment results. Normally within 3 working weeks (4 weeks for HE courses), if you have completed the work on time, unless agreed otherwise in advance with the lecturer.
  • Written information about grading and grades recorded according to the requirements of the relevant examining body.
  • A regular one-to-one tutorial for all full-time students (minimum of one per term) when an individual learning plan will be completed.
  • Access to specialist counselling, advice and careers guidance.
  • Details of the college complaints and appeals procedures.
  • Details of the college disciplinary procedures.
  • Details of how work placements are organised and monitored if they are part of your course.
  • The opportunity to compile or update a record of achievement.
  • Help in applying for places at University and other Higher Education colleges, including information on college compacts with local Higher Education-institutions.
  • Consultation on your views. Student surveys are conducted in October and May each year. Results are published in the form of wall posters as well as full reports. Quality reports are available in the college library.
  • Consultation on your views during internal college inspections.
  • At the end of your course you are entitled to:
  • A report on your performance.
  • A record of your achievement and certificates for the qualifications that you have obtained.
  • Impartial advice on what to do next.
  • A reference. This will be provided for up to five years after the completion of your course.
