Barking and Dagenham College Code of Practice on Equality of Opportunity

Barking and Dagenham College is committed to achieving a learning community free from discrimination, harassment or bullying and to removing barriers to achievement. We have made public our decision that: Barking and Dagenham College will operate zero tolerance of discrimination, harassment or bullying of any kind.

This code of practice outlines the steps that should be taken by staff and students to make this a reality:

  • Lead by example. Treat everyone with respect and consideration whatever their background or circumstances
  • Challenge. Do not let examples of discrimination, harassment or bullying happen without letting the person responsible know that you object. This applies equally to inappropriate use of language which may cause offence. Express your views courteously but firmly.
  • Report. If unacceptable actions or statements continue let someone in authority know. Students should not hesitate to seek support from their tutors, the college youth worker or the Student Union. Staff should similarly involve their Trade Union whenever necessary. If necessary students should make a report to Chris Witt, Director of Marketing by filling in a complaint form available from Reception, in a letter sent to room A23 or by phone on 01708 770044. Staff suffering unacceptable behaviour should report it to the Personnel Manager. Reports may be dealt with in confidence in the early stages if necessary.
  • Use college procedures. If staff are at fault they can be dealt with under staff Grievance or Disciplinary Procedures. If students are at fault there is a Student Disciplinary Procedure. If there are serous issues not being addressed by the college it may be appropriate to use the Public Interest Disclosures Procedure. All these procedures are available on the staff intranet. Our intention is to ensure that Barking and Dagenham College's commitment to equality of opportunity is a reality, not mere words.
